Jessica had been attending the weekly Job Search Club at the Hamilton March of Dimes Canada (MODC) office and applying for her own jobs while working with the Employment Services Team.
A MentorAbilty experience was provided at Tim Hortons to gain knowledge from the maintenance department. MODC accompanied her and assisted with introductions and after a meet and greet, Jessica was provided a formal interview and was hired on the spot for a maintenance worker position, starting within 3 days of the MentorAbilty experience. Jessica has an intellectual disability that requires modifications when training for a position. She, the manager, and MODC, coordinated best practise training procedures, safety protocol training, and first steps for starting work.
After the MentorAbilty experience, MODC met with Jessica and her mother who drove her to this appointment, to discuss and confirm next steps in travel and onboarding with this employer, MODC retention support, and Jessica’s use of self advocation on the job.
Jessica was thrilled to be hired and is looking forward to her start date and she and her mother said they were grateful for the support provided by MODC for Jessica with this employer.
